If my car has 17" alloys can I put new 17" alloys but with thicker tyres?

You can go wider in the back however there will be a point where they can be to thick I.E rubbing on the frame or the fender. In a rear wheel drive car this will most certainly improve traction, although in a front wheel drive this would be mostly cosmetic.
